Baby’s First Slam Poetry Event

Today is day 12 of my musical theater challenge, and yesterday was the first time I’ve missed a day. So, today I have to listen to The Lion King and Matilda before my babysitting job tonight.

I also have some other things to listen to. The reason I missed a day yesterday was because I chose instead to go to my first slam poetry event. There’s a group here in Abu Dhabi that apparently meets on a semi-regular basis, and I’ve heard they also do workshops. I felt a little bit out of place among the well-dressed hipsters, but all in all I had a good time!

The main reason I went was because I heard they were going to have a special guest: G. Yamazawa! Now, I’d never heard of this guy before. Apparently he’s a big deal. He’s been all over the world and even on TV. My main drive for going to see him was that he’s from Durham. A fellow North Carolinian in Abu Dhabi!

He didn’t perform until the end, but his performances were absolutely amazing. Even better, before he performed I had a chance to talk to him and buy two of his CDs, one of which was an EP whose worldwide release happens today (so all of us in that room had the chance to own it before anyone else in the world!). He was so easy to talk to, and he gave me a hug. In between performing his poems he talked a little bit, about himself, his life and about what he was about to perform. Listening to that part was almost as much fun as hearing the poems themselves. I would definitely watch an entire show of just him.

So, now I’ve heard his EP, and it’s great. All of you should go buy all his things. Also, watch his performances, and follow him on facebook and twitter.

Now for Lion King.
