Changes

I’ve realized that a lot of people don’t know what’s going on with me right now, so I thought I’d write this post to give everyone an update and try to start blogging more regularly.

I was working at a nursery in Sharjah. I came home at the beginning of the summer, mostly because the house I was living in didn’t have running water for more than a week. That turned into staying home for the summer because there were almost no kids at the nursery and it wasn’t cost-effective for my boss for me to be working. I spent months waiting to hear news and be called back. Finally, I gave up, and a few weeks ago when I went back to pick up my stuff, I finally heard the most up-to-date story. The nursery is having legal difficulties involving my boss and her business partner and at the time I officially moved back home, the business wasn’t operating at all.

All this left me very frustrated at the lost wages during the months I spent waiting to hear some news, when I could have been working at my old job. If I’d been more proactive I could have come up with other ways to earn money in the meantime, but I was bummed out and it was very hot outside and I ended up mostly just watching a lot of Transformers.

Now, I have a few different plans in the works. I don’t know how they’ll pan out, but I’m excited to start doing more of the kind of education work that I’m most interested in. Working in the nursery was good experience for me, but it only drove home that a traditional school environment isn’t for me, and that was one of the reasons I took the job—I wanted to be sure, and to be able to say that I tried it.

In other news, it’s National Novel Writing Month! And also my most ambitious year so far, nine years in. I started by writing a scifi novella that ended up being around 25,000 words. Now I’m working on a piece of interactive fiction, like a digital choose-your-own-adventure novel, and it has been a blast so far. Almost 2/3rds of the way through the month, I’m at 63,456 words, and I’m on track for 100,000 for the month. I’ve never written so much in so little time in my life, and I’m very excited to keep pushing forward after November ends! I have some fun plans. >:]
