I’d been avoiding this one. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve seen clips and gifs and I used to know a couple people that loved this musical, and it always looked very, very strange to me. So I put it off for the past two years, but today I finally bit the bullet.
Listen. I joked about it being incomprehensible and a musical about furries, but I was even more baffled watching it than I thought I’d be. I’m not exactly saying it was bad, just that I’d like to know what Andrew Lloyd Webber was smoking when he did this. And I’d also like to know who in his life told him it was a good idea.
This is basically a musical composed almost entirely of character introduction songs, which was confusing enough. I kept waiting for some kind of plot to happen, and then when I thought it had (when the old leader cat got caught in the net of that criminal), nothing was made of it and everything was fine. The criminal cat didn’t appear again. The only “plot” was that the cat everyone shunned (for reasons I didn’t understand) was allowed to climb the stairs to heaven at the end, or something.
Cats is just really weird??? It’s weird, guys. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel about it.
