This, along with Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton, are the musicals I see the most often made into animatics. That was something I’d never really seen before those three musicals. I admit I watched an animatic for Michael in the Bathroom and then had it stuck in my head for days, but that was all I knew about the show. It was definitely weirder, conceptually, than I assumed from that one song. Being a kid in high school, going to parties and having a panic attack is pretty commonplace, I hear. I wouldn’t know, I never went to any parties (or high school, for that matter).
Be More Chill is about a kid in high school who likes a girl and then finds out about a pill he can take that implants a little computer in his brain that then tells him exactly what to do to be chill. This, of course, leads to him dumping his nerdy best friend and dating a girl he didn’t intend, but also involves the computer trying to spread to the entire school and eventually the world, so that everyone can be more chill.
As I get older, I find myself less interested in high school stories. But I’ll admit the music for this one was fun. I only listened to the soundtrack, so I can’t comment on the staging or even the rest of the story besides what was on wikipedia. But I enjoyed what I heard. The songs were catchy and modern while being unique and not just carbon copies of the top-40 pop music sound. I’ll probably listen to it again during the rest of the year. Maybe I’ll watch more of those animatics.
