MTM Day 20: Moulin Rouge

[Full list]

I first found out about this musical because I watched an Ouran High School Host Club AMV set to Elephant Love Medley. I realize those probably sound like nonsense words to people who don’t know either OHSHC or Moulin Rouge.

Moulin Rouge is a musical about a writer who moves to Paris to be a penniless hippie and falls in love with a performer and sex worker (and she with him), and proceeds to write a show for her to star in that mirrors the struggle they themselves are facing. They can’t just be together, because there’s a very rich guy who wants to be with the woman and has a financial hold over the club she performs at. The music is mostly arrangements and covers of existing popular songs (or at least, they probably were popular in 2001 when the movie came out).

It wasn’t quite what I expected, especially with the narration style at the beginning, but I won’t say I didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was an entertaining watch. Kind of a bummer ultimately. The music was fun to hear because it was familiar, but most of it didn’t stick out to me as something I’d want to listen to on repeat (except for Elephant Love Medley, which I already knew all the words to and absolutely sang along to). The exception is their rendition of Roxanne which I really liked.

Anyway. A decent movie, but not one I’m jumping at the bit to watch again.

Next: My Fair Lady! (Again!)
