MTM Day 25: Carousel

[Full list]

Another movie, because it was easier to find than a stage version. The people in the comments of the video where I watched this claimed it was one of the greatest musicals of all time. Honestly, story-wise, I wasn’t thrilled.

It was deferent, definitely. But I felt like there wasn’t much to latch onto as far as the likeability of the main character. He and his love interest both just felt like people who kept making bad decisions, and while she deserved better, she also should have made better choices.

I did like the part about their daughter, but that was only about the last half hour. I don’t feel like I needed the first 3/4 telling me how not great this guy is. He isn’t evil, he just… made bad choices, which affected others badly and he didn’t seem to care about that. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if it were split half and half with him and his daughter.

(Also, the whole ‘of course it’s possible for someone to hit you hard and have it not even hurt’ thing?? Hmm. Hmmmmm.)

Besides the story, there were some good songs. I sang You’ll Never Wall Alone in choir in high school, and it’s still a nice song. There was also some pretty entertaining dancing in this one.

Maybe one day I’ll give the stage version a shot. Until then, I’ll just stick with the soundtrack.

Next: Hair!
