There was a musical playing in theaters during musical theater month, I couldn’t not go see it. This one, apparently, didn’t start out as a theater production, but I’m still counting it.
If you’ve never heard of it (I almost missed its existence entirely), this movie is about the creation of the Barnum circus, starring Hugh Jackman, who I think we should all allow to continue to play singing parts forever. It’s colorful, the music is fun (especially considering the modern styles used in a historical setting), and I enjoyed the story. Overall I thought it was definitely worth seeing and I really liked it.
Story-wise, it actually reminds me a little bit of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, as absurd as that may sound. Both center on a man from a poor background marrying an upper-class woman and then struggling with their self-worth issues and perceived inability to provide for their family. This leads them to take greater and more drastic measures to gain what they lack, at the expense of their family life. The Greatest Showman has a much happier ending than Black Flag does, but this aspect of Black Flag’s story has always touched me deeply, so it was nice to see a happy ending in this movie.
I would have liked if we had gotten the chance to see more of the personalities of the performers, but it was already a pretty long movie, so I’m not sure where they would have put it. Overall, though, I very much enjoyed it.
